Back Orifice is a remote control/administration program for Windows
95/98 systems. With BO installed, anyone with a BO client and the
server password can connect to the machine in question and perform
many tasks without user knowledge. BO gives more control over the
machine to the BO client than to the user sitting on the keyboard.
BO is a nice program, very well written a much useful. Unfortunately, so many people are using it to the evil; thanks to its ease of transmission (it's a very small executable) and installation (no user intervention required). It can be easily hidden in a package containing another program and sent via e-mail or simple copying -- it suffices to execute the program to the BO server install itself in Windows. Once installed, the machine becomes potentially vulnerable. Today, the BO server is being distributed without password, and this allows anyone on the Internet to take control over the infected machine. |
